Extracting stills from video is a great way for creatives to source inspiration. By isolating still frames from video, creatives can easily reference, pitch and explain ideas. They also serve as a great visual reference during the creative process, allowing creatives to quickly revisit and review ideas. Extracting stills from video allows creatives to reference key moments in a video when pitching their own ideas.

The process can be time consuming, however, and require multiple tools to achieve. In this text, we will discuss the tools available for extracting and exporting stills from After Effects, Final Cut and Premiere. Finally we will explain how to rapidly extract frames with Kive’s own Frame Extraction tool that simplifies and speeds up the process.

Extracting Stills from After Effects, Final Cut and Premiere

Extracting stills from After Effects, Final Cut and Premiere requires a few steps.

In After Effects, the process starts with setting the timeline marker to the exact frame you want to extract. Then you must select the current frame and go to Composition > Save Frame As. You will then be able to save the still to your desired file type.

In Final Cut and Premiere, the process is similar. First you must locate the exact frame you want to extract, and then select File > Export > Frame. You will then be able to save the still to your desired file type.
